“The Sims” Says Goodbye To Gender Restrictions, Introduces Trans Characters

"We recognize that diversity is beautiful and wonderful in the world — it’s our job to reflect that in the game."
From: NewNowNext
Maxis and EA Games, creators of the wildly popular life simulation video game The Sims, have made a bold statement in favor of unique self-expression and self-identification by removing all “gender barriers” in the game.

Maxis announced in a statement on its website that a new free update for The Sims 4 expands gender customization options and will allow players to choose physiques, walking styles, and tones of voice regardless of their character’s gender.

The new update also unlocks more than 700 items — including clothes, hairstyles, and jewelry — that were previously unavailable to characters based on their gender.

“For the first time, you’ll be able to customize your Sims without the gender boundaries previously set in place,” Maxis said in the statement.

“The Sims is made by a diverse team for a diverse audience, and it’s really important to us that players are able to be creative and express themselves through our games. We want to make sure players can create characters they can identify with or relate to through powerful tools that give them influence over a Sims gender, age, ethnicity, body type and more.”

In an interview with Buzzfeed News, Rachel Franklin, executive producer of The Sims 4, said the company worked closely with GLAAD to ensure the new update would be sensitive to all players.

“The Sims has always been this magical sandbox where you get to create the Sim that you want,” said Franklin. “We recognize that diversity is beautiful and wonderful in the world — it’s our job to reflect that in the game.”

She added: “We are always delighted to see how people use the game and how people play the game. We want them to be able to find a way to express themselves and their creativity and give them all the tools possible to do that — to accurately reflect themselves.”

Robbie Rogers Throws Out First Pitch At L.A. Dodgers’ LGBT Night

Also at Dodgers Stadium: Jason Collins, Michael Sam, and former NFLer Esera Tuaolo.
From: NewNowNext
On Friday, the L.A. Dodgers hosted their fourth annual LGBT night, with out soccer player Robbie Rogers throwing the ceremonial
first pitch.

Rogers makes his living in a sport where you can’t use your hands, but he was no slouch on the pitching mound.

Both Michael Sam and Jason Collins were at Dodger Stadium, where former NFL player Esera Tuaolo sang the National Anthem. (Tuaolo came out in 2002, after retiring from football.) Out college basketball coach Julie Shaw and Mitch Eby, the first openly gay player in college football, were also listed among the VIPs.

In fact the only professional sport not represented, ironically, was Major League Baseball.

At least not by a player: Erik Braverman, the Dodgers’ VP of marketing, came out in December.

Others in attendance included Lance Bass, Leslie Jordan, The Real O’Neals’ Noah Galvin, Rich Kids of Beverly Hills star E.J. Johnson.

And special rainbow-colored Dodgers tank tops were available for sale.

LGBT Night is one of many themed nights at Dodgers Stadium—others include Hispanic Heritage Night, Yoga Day, Sinatra Night, Filipino Heritage Night and Military Appreciation Night.

Of course there were the usual howls of “when is Straight Night?”, to which one commenter had the perfect reply

“The answer is every other day the Dodgers play.”

…You will never know the importance this game has for a young fan that has no idea that’s there’s a world out there that’s full of possibilities.

Robbie Rogers should be proud. He’s man enough to be public and put himself in a position where he’s ridiculed by complete strangers that have no idea what he had to go though to now be here throwing the first pitch at a major league baseball game.

He’s more courageous than most of you will ever be—also he’s more successful than you. #eatit

Rebel Wilson Slays As Ursula In “Little Mermaid” Live Concert In Hollywood

"It's what I live for, to help unfortunate merfolk, like yourself, poor souls with no one else to turn to. "
From: NewNowNext
Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson killed it as Ursula the sea-witch in a star-studded production of The Little Mermaid Live at the Hollywood Bowl this past weekend.

The concert saw Wilson and co-stars Sara Bareilles (Ariel), Tituss Burgess (Sebastian), Darren Criss (Prince Eric) and John Stamos (Chef Louis) performing the Disney classic’s iconic songs along with a live orchestra, all while the film played on a screen above the stage.

Though all of the night’s performances were stunning, it was Wilson’s hilarious embodiment of Ursula in her rendition of “Poor Unfortunate Souls” that stole the show.

Like her sinister octopus sister, Wilson served up her cunning evil with plenty of sass, cheekiness and sexy body language.

Other highlights included Tituss Burgess’ “Under the Sea”:

Darren Criss’ “Her Voice”:

And of course, Sara Bareilles’ “Part of Your World”:

Mr. Gay Wales Crowns Pageant’s First Disabled Winner

"I’m a man who happens to like men and I also have one hand," says Paul Davies.
From: NewNowNext
Last week Paul Davies was crowned Mr. Gay Wales, the first disabled delegate in the history of the competition.

Hailing from the Rhondda Valleys in southern Wales, Davies, 32, is an attractive and outgoing journalist who refuses to be embarrassed or TK by his disabled hand—or as he calls it, his “stump.”

“That’s what you can call it,” he tells Attitude. “It is a stump and if I can make people relax with humor then I will do that. My nickname is ’Stumpy!.'”

Davies says he sees too much “fracturing” in the LGBT community. “We’re all fighting against each other,” he warns. “There’s so many minority groups there that need to all club together. I see people being oppressed within our own community who are disabled or racially different… [and] we’re making ourselves even more of a minority.”

Or as he and Latrice Royale put it…

Davies hopes to bring that message of acceptance and inclusion to disabled people and the LGBT community at large when he competes in Mr. Gay Europe next month.

“I want to give some inspiration to people with visible disabilities and say, ‘Look, you can do it. You can do this, you can make a difference. Don’t hide away, don’t put your hand in your pocket because you feel somebody’s gonna judge you. Show it. Be proud of who you are.'”

“That’s the same thing with sexuality,” he adds. “For me, I’m a man who happens to like men and I also have one hand [laughs].”

Davies grew up on a council estate—the UK version of public housing. It was a close-knit community, but not one exactly welcoming to gay people.

“Generally the rule of thumb back in the day was that if you were gay, you moved away,” he says. One friend committed suicide as a result of nonstop bullying, but Davies says his extroverted nature allowed him to deflect most negative attention.

“I was very lucky, because proving people wrong about my stump was the challenge… When I came out as gay the community was very accepting. Unfortunately I saw the people get bullied and that was horrible.”

There was one teacher, though, who really had it in for him.

“She was very against me and my hand. In fact, she even told me I should stop bothering with work because I’m never going to get anywhere in life. I was about 13 or 14, a really impressionable age,” he says.

“If I wasn’t as headstrong as I was, that could have really got to me. Instead I knew that was a motivation to get me through and just think, ‘You cow, how dare you say that.’”

Mr Gay Europe will be held on July 30. Voting begins July 1.

International Mister Spain Crowns Model Daniel Rodriguez Its First Openly Gay Winner

Ay papi!
From: NewNowNext
Daniel Rodriguez, the 23-year-old model who snagged the crown at the International Mister Spain 2016 pageant in Playa de Aro last week, has publicly come out as gay in the wake of his major win.

The Tenerife native beat 47 other contestants on his way to the top, and will move on to represent Spain at the Mister International pageant in Toronto this fall.

According to ABC, it’s the first time an openly gay man has held the Mister Spain title.
Rodriguez came out officially in an exclusive exit interview with the outlet, and said he never considered coming out during the competition because he didn’t think it was necessary, or that it would help or harm him.

“The truth is I never asked myself that it was something necessary because I did not see it as a reason why I could not claim the title,” he said. (His interview has been roughly translated using Google Translate.) “I wear my sexual orientation naturally and hence did not say to not consider essential.”

The aspiring model revealed he’s been out to family and friends for most of his life and that he’s “never” encountered a problem relating to his sexuality. Asked whether he thought coming out would affect his professional relationships, Rodriguez said, “I hope not. I made very good friends with some colleagues and I wish that nothing changes from now.”

As the winner of a beauty pageant, which are very popular in Spain, Rodriguez will be put on a pedestal in the media and have to deal with his image being sexualized.

Asked for his response to people who think a gay man shouldn’t hold such a title, Rodriguez said “I do not understand why. A homosexual can be as masculine as a heterosexual.”

Congrats, Daniel!

President Obama Addresses 35th Anniversary Of AIDS Epidemic

“We've learned that stigma and silence don't just fuel ignorance. They foster transmission and give life to a plague."
From: NewNowNext
June 5 marked 35 years since the first documented case of HIV/AIDS, and President Obama released a statement commemorating the anniversary.

The president made special mention of the shame and stigma attached to the disease, especially in its early years, and paid tribute to the many who died due to the lack of attention that it received.

“We’ve learned that stigma and silence don’t just fuel ignorance,” Obama said. “They foster transmission and give life to a plague. We’ve seen that testing, treatment, education, and acceptance can not only save and extend lives, but fight the discrimination that halted progress for too long.”

He praised PrEP as a breakthrough in HIV prevention and celebrated new research funding, declaring that he’s still hoping for an “AIDS-free generation” within this century.

Obama also gave hope to those suffering by reminding them how far we’ve come in fighting the disease.

“Let’s call the names,” he said. “Let’s remember those we lost too soon. And let’s rededicate ourselves to ending this epidemic once and for all.”

Policeman Breaks Up Fight At Gay Bar, Then Performs “I Will Survive”

Gloria Gaynor has even commented on the performance.
From: NewNowNext
A Scottish police officer stunned patrons at a gay bar this week when he performed Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” after breaking up a bar fight.

Sergeant Jon Harris was called to deal with an incident outside the Waterloo Bar in Glasgow, and when he went inside to finish up the report, he was persuaded to get on stage and perform.

“It was an accomplishment that I got him up to do it,” said karaoke host Katie Boyle. “He was brilliant and just goes to show not all bad can be said about Police Scotland.”

The video has since gone viral, and even Gloria Gaynor herself has commented on it.

Now that is the ultimate stamp of approval.

Out Trans Man Dexter Thomas In The Running For PETA’s “Sexiest Vegan Next Door”

He gets our vote!
From: NewNowNext
Dexter Thomas could become the first trans winner of PETA’s annual “Sexiest Vegan Next Door” contest.

According to LGBTQ Nation, the 34 year-old Salt Lake City resident “is one of ten male finalists who could win a trip to Maui, after the tabulation of votes cast by visitors to the animal rights organization’s website.”

On the website where you can cast your vote for the contest, PETA describes Thomas as:

“…a transgender activist who believes that everyone deserves equal consideration, respect, and compassion, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, race or species. As a researcher, he uses his expertise to advocate for non-animal test methods, including during his time working for the National Institutes of Health.”

Thomas has been a vegan since he was 17, when he campaigned for his high school to include vegan lunch options. He dropped out before graduation due to the difficulty of his transition, but went onto obtain his GED and is now a doctorate student of social psychology at the University of Utah. His next goal is to launch a career as an advocate for animals and homeless sexual-minority youth.
“I’m honored and excited to be the first-ever out transgender finalist of PETA’s Sexiest Vegan Next Door contest,” Thomas wrote on Facebook, “…this is a very important time for diverse trans visibility and for all of us to do our best to be a voice for the oppressed.”

“Nothing gets hearts racing like someone who’s healthy, fit, energetic, and passionate about social justice, and that description fits vegans to a T,” said PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman in a statement on the contest. “Dexter Thomas and the other sexy vegans in PETA’s contest are already winners because they’re making the world a better place for all living beings one delicious plant-based meal at a time.”

Thomas would be following in the footsteps of Víctor Iván Barragán, the openly out winner of last year’s “Sexiest Vegan Next Door” contest.

Voting ends on June 7. PETA will then select the winners based on several factors, including vote count. The winners will be announced and notified on June 14.

'Originally, modeling was kind of something I wanted to try just to try. As I started doing it more I realized how much I enjoyed doing it and I want to try to pursue some kind of career out of it.'

'My goal is to make sure to get to the gym more and eat a lot healthier and try and get into other types of modeling, especially runway modeling. Fashion is something I've always enjoyed and it's definitely more enjoyable than what I'm studying in school currently.'

'Even though I love fashion and being in the city, I was raised on the farm doing farm chores and going to hunting camp with my dad and uncles every hunting season. I grew up country, but I never truly enjoyed that style of living. I didn't like doing barn chores, playing in the mud and I absolutely hated going to hunting camp. It did teach me a lot though like how to never take anything for granted and also taught me how to be a harder worker when times get tough.'

New UFC Champ Michael Bisping Calls Opponent F*ggot In Post-Fight Takedown

The expletive came at the end of a long string of taunts exchanged between the rivals.
From: NewNowNext
Underdog Michael Bisping stunned fans with a surprising first-round knockout against opponent Luke Rockhold at UFC 199 this past weekend. However, it’s a homophobic slur he made toward his opponent backstage following the match that has news sources buzzing.

After Bisping (pictured below with blue gloves) successfully snagged the UFC middlweight title from Rockhold at the championships Saturday night, the two bitter rivals sat down for a post-fight news conference. Typically, this is when the opponents would publicly congratulate and thank one another, putting on a good face for the sport and the organization. This time, however, both Bisping and Rockhold took it as an opportunity to relentlessly rail against each other.

The acerbic exchange saw the two flinging curses and jabs, with Bisping particularly upset that Rockhold refused to shake his hand after his victory. Things escalated quickly and as the two stood to leave the conference, Bisping called Rockhold a “f*ggot.”

After making the slur, Bisping quickly caught himself, saying “Oh, I shouldn’t have said that.”

This isn’t the first time the UFC champion has gotten in hot water for using an anti-gay expletive. In 2011, Bisping caught flak for calling an opponent a “f*ggot m-fer” in a promotional video.

The collection features tank tops and t-shirts emblazoned with the phrase, as well as tops with the American flag done up in rainbow colors. The items appear on their website alongside videos that focus on the importance of acceptance.
