June 11th is Corn on the Cob Day

June 11 of each year is the day to celebrate National Corn on the Cob Day.  Fresh corn on the cob is a summertime treat that people from all corners of the United States look forward to as we start the picnic season.

Corn on the cob is also known in different regions as pole corn, cornstick, sweet pole, butter-pop or long maize.   It is a sweet corn that is picked when the kernels are still tender when it’s in its milk stage.

Boiling, steaming, roasting or grilling are the most common ways of preparing corn on the cob.   If it is grilled or oven roasted, the corn is usually left in its husk during the cooking process.

Proper dinner etiquette for eating corn says it is appropriate to hold the cob at each end with your fingers.

Congressional candidate Bob Poe: I'm HIV positive

From: Orlando Sentinel
Former state Democratic party Chair Bob Poe, a candidate for Central Florida's 10th Congressional District, revealed Thursday that he is HIV positive.

Poe, 61, said he was diagnosed with the virus that causes AIDS in 1998 and is currently in good health. He revealed the diagnosis in an interview with Watermark magazine of Orlando as well as a video posted to his Facebook page.

In an interview, Poe said he felt compelled to reveal his diagnosis after encountering a recently diagnosed HIV-positive woman while campaigning.

She "thought she had a death sentence," Poe said. "I really just wanted to hug her and let her know that I, too, have HIV, and that I've been able to live out all of my hopes and all of my dreams, and she could, too."

If elected, Poe said he believed he would be the first openly HIV-positive member of Congress.

Poe, who is openly gay and married his husband, Kenneth Brown, last year, said he plans to bring attention to the importance of adequate funding for HIV testing, prevention and treatment.

"Probably within the next week or so I'll be announcing a symposium with health officials and community leaders, so that we can really attack this issue, begin to get more people tested and diagnosed and more people treated," he said.

HIV cases have spiked in Florida in recent years. Statewide, cases have risen each year since 2012. Through November, Orange County had the third-highest total in the state last year, behind Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

Florida was second in the nation in new HIV diagnoses in 2014, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Poe said he worries that the state's growing heroin epidemic will only make the problem worse.

"We're going to see even more infection rates, and we have to address this problem," he said. "The problem exists because it's in the shadows and because people fear sharing their stories about it."

A radio industry veteran and member of the Orlando Magic's first management team, Poe was diagnosed two years before he became chair of Florida's Democratic party. He said he doesn't know how he contracted the virus but still remembers his fear.

"It was a very scary time," he said. "I remember, when I got the diagnosis, it was very difficult to believe. It was like getting the air knocked out of you."

He later revealed his diagnosis to John Morgan, a longtime friend and Democratic donor.

"I was just floored. The first thing I thought was, 'Are you dying?'" the Orlando attorney recalled. "I know [HIV-positive basketball legend] Magic Johnson, and I know how well he's done, but I was still just kind of knocked out of my shoes."

Poe said he is not concerned about how the announcement could affect him politically.

"I had to go through that decision-making process. There are some people who have told me that this would be very politically damaging to my political career… but if it was, so be it," Poe said.

Poe faces a crowded Democratic primary field for District 10, which also includes state Sen. Geraldine Thompson, former Orlando police Chief Val Demings and attorney Fatima Fahmy.

"I wish him all the best," said Fahmy on Thursday. She added that the state's rising HIV diagnosis figures highlight "the importance of having universal health care for everyone."

Thompson also said she supports increased funding for HIV detection and treatment, noting that she sponsored a 2015 bill that allows doctors to more easily conduct routine tests for the virus.

Court-ordered redistricting recently shifted the district from Republican-leaning to heavily Democratic, prompting incumbent Republican Rep. Daniel Webster to run instead in District 11. Two Republicans have also filed to run: Thuy Lowe of Sorrento and Geoffrey Michael LaGarde of Jacksonville.

Zachary Quinto Performs George Michael’s “Freedom” With Cindy Crawford On “Lip Sync Battle”

Crawford turns in a performance you have to see to believe.
From: NewNowNext
This week’s Lip Sync Battle saw Star Trek Beyond co-stars Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana duking it out with some tight and impressive lip-syncs while embodying the likes of Missy Elliott, TLC and, in Quinto’s case, a near pitch-perfect George Michael.

Quinto flaunted his flawless impression of the 1980s heartthrob in response to Saldana’s fierce performance of TLC’s classic “No Scrubs.” The American Horror Story actor took to the stage in an iconic George Michael look complete with leather jacket, snug jeans, white tee and, of course, an over-sized cross earring.

His lip-sync of Michael’s “Freedom” was spot on, but it was the surprise appearance of a nude Cindy Crawford (who appeared in the original music video for “Freedom”) lounging in a bathtub that sent the studio audience into an absolute tizzy.

Check out Quinto’s “Freedom” lip sync:

And Saldana’s sickening performance of “No Scrubs” (with TLC!):

Shavuot is June 11th to June 13th

Shavuot, in Ashkenazi usage; Shavuʿoth in Sephardi and Mizrahi Hebrew (Hebrew: שבועות‎‎, lit. "Weeks"), known as the Feast of Weeks in English and as Pentecost (Πεντηκοστή) in Ancient Greek, is a Jewish holiday that occurs on the sixth day of the Hebrew month of Sivan (may fall between 14 May–15 June).

Shavuot has a double significance. It marks the all-important wheat harvest in the Land of Israel (Exodus 34:22); and it commemorates the anniversary of the day God gave the Torah to the entire nation of Israel assembled at Mount Sinai, although the association between the giving of the Torah (Matan Torah) and Shavuot is not explicit in the Biblical text.

The holiday is one of the Shalosh Regalim, the three Biblical pilgrimage festivals. It marks the conclusion of the Counting of the Omer, and its date is directly linked to that of Passover. The Torah mandates the seven-week Counting of the Omer, beginning on the second day of Passover, to be immediately followed by Shavuot. This counting of days and weeks is understood to express anticipation and desire for the giving of the Torah. On Passover, the people of Israel were freed from their enslavement to Pharaoh; on Shavuot they were given the Torah and became a nation committed to serving God. The word Shavuot means weeks, and the festival of Shavuot marks the completion of the seven-week counting period between Passover and Shavuot. The yahrzeit of King David is traditionally observed on Shavuot. Hasidic Jews also observe the yahrzeit of the Baal Shem Tov.

Shavuot is one of the less familiar Jewish holidays to secular Jews in the Jewish diaspora, while those in Israel as well as the Orthodox community are more aware of it. According to Jewish law, Shavuot is celebrated in Israel for one day and in the Diaspora (outside of Israel) for two days. Reform Judaism celebrates only one day, even in the Diaspora.

4 Reasons The First Female Major-Party Presidential Nomination Is Good For The Gays

From: Queerty
Hillary Clinton has claimed victory in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, and at this point, it’s all over but the shouting. There will still be plenty of that from Bernie Sanders’ supporters, particularly around her reliance on super delegates. But the fact remains, Clinton won about 3.5 million more votes total than Sanders. It’s been a hard slog for Clinton, harder than it should have been, but now she can turn her attention to November.

Given the choice between Clinton and a candidate whose own supporters call him racist, it’s not hard to make a call as to who will win your vote. Still, using Trump as a bar against which to measure Clinton doesn’t do her nomination justice. Trump, wholly unprepared to be the leader of the free world, himself will scare women voters–all kinds of voters, really–into her own camp. But she is a formidable candidate in her own right.

Here are four reasons why having a major party nominate a woman as president will benefit us…

1. Breaking the glass ceiling again

We need to celebrate other firsts if we are ever to accomplish our own. Want a gay or lesbian presidential nominee? We need to see other barriers fall, eliminating all non-performance related barriers to political power. While our advances have been swift, the modern LGBTQ movement is relatively young compared to the struggles for women and people of color. With Barack Obama and now Hillary Clinton, two major barriers were shattered. That clears the way for a serious LGBT candidate in the not-too-distant future. (And no, Fred Karger is never going to be the guy.)

2. Reinforcing identity politics

Maybe the day will come when gender or sexual identity doesn’t matter in American politics. But that day isn’t here yet, not by a long shot. Clinton’s nomination clearly highlights the importance of identity politics, and she understands it intimately in a way that Sanders never did. She made a point of her feminist credentials and of appealing to women. It’s when (largely Republican) candidates argue that they are blind to race, gender or orientation that you have to worry, because it’s the first step toward having your movement de-legitimized. That’s not going to happen now with a woman heading the Democratic ticket.

3. Defeating the religious right

We all know the battles that the Clintons have had with the vast right-wing conspiracy. Hillary will not underestimate them as foes, nor the dangers they present to LGBTQ equality worldwide. But putting aside the political difference, having a strong woman as the party nominee undermines many of the tropes the religious right likes to trot out about women. As much as they may applaud their right-wing female politicians, conservative Christians still believe that a woman’s greatest accomplishment is being a wife and mother. To them, being president of the United States is not a role designated for a woman. Showing that a woman can hold the most powerful position in the free world further undermines the dying world view of the religious right of rigid gender–and by extension sexual–roles.

4. Working harder, knowing more

One of the unfortunate facts of any strong successful woman’s life is that she has to work harder and know more than a male colleague. Clinton certainly fits the bill, commanding an impressive knowledge of the arcana of policy and a wealth of experience. While that’s a sad commentary on what it takes for a woman to reach the top, those kind of hard-earned smarts will only pay dividends for us and other allies.

Of course, all of these points apply to certain woman. If the nominee in question were, say Sarah Palin or Michele Bachmann, we’d be having a much different conversation. Luckily, the first woman to be nominated is one who is staunchly pro-gay (if a little slow to show it at times). She was particularly passionate about advancing our cause worldwide as secretary of state, and that’s where so much work toward equality and against violence and discrimination still need to be done. The fact remains: A historical breakthrough of this kind is good for us.

In fact, it’s good for the nation, particularly when it’s contrasted with the harrowing alternative that the Republicans are floating, albeit half-heartedly.

Gay Latino Trump Supporter Attacked By Protestors

I don't understand how a Gay & Latino man can support Trump, and while I DO NOT condone what happened, it is the words and actions of the candidate he supports that cause the violence he suffered.
From: NewNowNext
A gay Latino Republican was attacked at a Donald Trump rally last week in San Jose, suffering a mild concussion and broken nose in the process.

There were multiple clashes at the rally outside the San Jose Convention Center on Wednesday, when more than 300 protestors threw eggs, shouted slurs and banging on cars.

Juan Hernandez says anti-Trump protesters came out of nowhere and started throwing punches at him.

“It was riots,” Hernandez told Fox News. Riots were happening everywhere, and the protesters were picking out supporters and sucker-punching them, taking them down.”

A friend reportedly asked a nearby police officer why they didn’t interfere and was told they were ordered to stand down by Mayor Sam Liccardo and Police Chief Eddie Garcia.

“The police personnel on scene had the difficult task of weighing the need to immediately apprehend the suspect(s) against the possibility that police action involving the use of physical force under the circumstances would further insight the crowd and produce more violent behavior,” said officer Albert Morales said in a press statement.

Ultimately, San Diego police arrested four demonstrators on charges including assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful assembly.

A “Justice for Juan” rally was held at San Jose City Hall on Wednesday afternoon.

On Facebook, Hernandez lashed out at Democrats.

My experience at the Trump rally in San Jose. Protesters = they are criminals, otherwise known as Democrats.

Got jumped last night as we exited the rally. Really? For practicing my right to support the next Commander in Chief?? Law enforcement failed last night in San Jose. Failed.

Thanks for a broken nose, uncontrollable bleeding, and a bash to the head, Democrats. You sure are doing your party proud.

Will Lexington Lives—As CMT Picks Up “Nashville”

The wave of love and appreciation they have unleashed for ‘Nashville’ has been overwhelming," said CMT head Brian Philips.
From: NewNowNext
CMT has confirmed it will air the next season of the country-music drama Nashville.

"There's thinking about doing something...and there's just doing it." - Deacon
“On the heels of tremendous outcry from legions of devoted fans, CMT, Hulu, Lionsgate and ABC Studios today announced that the critically acclaimed and fan darling series Nashville will return with a brand new season on CMT,” a spokesperson told NNN.

“Long-time SVOD partner Hulu will continue to bring fans their favorite series 24/7 by making all Nashville episodes available to stream the day after they air on CMT.

Brian Philips, president of CMT, described the love and support the show has been receiving as “overwhelming.”

Nashville is a perfect addition to our evolving line-up of big music specials, documentaries and original series. We see our fans and ourselves in this show, and we will treasure it like no other network,” said Philips. “Nashville belongs on CMT.”

Season Five (which will stream on Hulu the day after it airs) will have 22 episodes and feature new show runners, producing partners Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick (thirtysomething, My So-Called Life, Once and Again, ).

The cast is not expected to change.

The big question is what’s in store for out singer Will Lexington (Chris Carmack)? When we left Will, he had finally made peace with being a “gay country singer,” and reunited with former boyfriend Kevin (Kyle Dean Massey).

We’ve never heard of a nighttime drama where the course of love ran smoothly, so we’re sure the couple will face new obstacles. And it will still be difficult for Will to get a foothold in country music as an out gay man.

Now that Nashville is returning, what do you hope to see in Will Lexington’s future?

Why This Breast Cancer Survivor Is Taking A Bold Step Against North Carolina’s HB2

"I want to scream, 'YES! You are seeing it right! This is breast cancer," says Christi Salcedo.
From: NewNowNext
Christi Salcedo is a survivor: She overcame a grueling battle with breast cancer that necessitated a double mastectomy and the removal of her lymph nodes. But when she posted a shirtless selfie the other day, it wasn’t just to raise awareness about cancer.

It was to let people know that transphobic legislation like North Carolina’s HB2 affects her, too.

“The great bathroom debate of 2016 has hurt more than just the transgender community,” she wrote on Facebook. “It has hurt us survivors.”

Salcedo, 32, opted not to have reconstructive surgery and says she’s been confronted by people unsure of her gender identity.

“I notice more eyes trying to figure me out,” she wrote. “At the grocery store, restaurants… Walmart was the worst. I want to scream, ’YES! You are seeing it right! This is breast cancer… Please check yourself!’ But instead I let my eyes meet theirs in an almost plea for a change in what has become our society.”

Salcedo lives in Texas, where Governor Greg Abbott has threatened to pass a “bathroom bill” similar to North Carolina’s. Should that happen, she worries she could be confronted in a public rest room or department store dressing room.

“I am personally of the belief that no transgender person wants to cause trouble in a bathroom. People just want to use the restroom,” she wrote.

“Persons undergoing cancer treatment or post cancer treatment may lack hair and wear a baseball hat. They may have undergone a mastectomy like myself. Please consider these things.”

Weatherman And Anchors Lose It Over Penis-Shaped Cloud

"It's about as subtle as a sledgehammer, mate."
From: NewNowNext
News anchors attempt to be as professional as possible while they are on the air, but it seems that when it comes to a cloud that looks like a penis, these anchors couldn’t contain their giggles.

Weatherman Sam Wallace was attempting to explain a photo of a cloud formation known as a “water spout” when he took a step back and asked if there was anything else the anchors could see in the photo.

“Oh Sam, you didn’t have to say that,” the male anchor responded. “It’s about as subtle as a sledgehammer, mate.”

But it appears it wasn’t so obvious to his co-anchor, who immediately burst into laughter at the sight of the cloud, while Sam just stood there smiling proudly.

Rudy Giuliani Officiates First Same-Sex Wedding

“My views have evolved on this issue, like so many other people’s,” said the former NYC mayor and Republican presidential candidate.
From: NewNowNext
Many politicians have evolved on the subject of marriage equality—even LGBT allies like President Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Some just evolve slower than others: Five years after New York legalized marriage equality, former mayor Rudy Guiliani is officiating his first-same-sex wedding.

Next weekend, Giuliani, 72, will help longtime friend and adviser Scott Segal marry his boyfriend, Travis Hatch, at the Willard Hotel in Washington, DC.

“My views have evolved on this issue, like so many other people’s,” says Giuliani.

“For a long time, my religious background gave me a resistance to the idea of marriage rights,” says the thrice-married politician. “But as I looked at it, I came to realize that in so many cases the relationships were… stronger and better than heterosexual marriages.”

The wedding will be a high-class affair—ladies in floor-length gowns and gentleman in tuxedos. “The vows are traditional… nothing too soupy and sappy,” says Segal  (left, with Hatch).

Considering how close Giuliani has been to a number of gay men, it’s surprising it’s taken him this long to solemnize a same-sex union.

Indeed, when then-mayor Giuliani’s marriage to Donna Hanover collapsed in 2001, he sought refuge at the East Side apartment of gay couple Howard Koeppel and Mark Hsiao for six months rather than stay at Gracie Mansion.

But while Guiliani was happy to march with Koeppel in the gay Pride parade that year, he reneged on his promise to marry him and Hsiao after New York legalized same-sex marriage in 2011.

But maybe that’s because he was weighing another presidential run in 2012. Clearly the tide has changed enough—or perhaps his prospects with the GOP have dimmed enough—that it’s not an issue.

The Washington Post reports Giuliani “jumped at the chance” to help the couple tie the knot.

“Travis really grounds Scott — a good marriage is one where each person gets stronger and better because of their connection to one another, and that is certainly the case,” he says. “I’m glad our society has come to this point.”

Although some of us had to be dragged kicking and screaming.

Giuliani’s name has returned to the headlines lately, as he’s been rumored to be Donald Trump’s pick for Secretary of Homeland Security.

“He’s my friend and I think, of the candidates, of the choices that I have, he’s the best choice for president,” Giuliani said of Trump shortly before the New York primary.

English Soccer Player Suspended After Calling Team “A Bunch Of Faggots”

He later claimed he didn't know what the term meant.
From: NewNowNext
A soccer player in England was suspended and fined for a homophobic comment he made on Twitter last month.

Coventry City’s Chris Stokes received a one-match suspension and was slapped with a £1000 fine, or $1430, for calling the players of an opposing team a “bunch of faggots” on Twitter.

The city opened an internal investigation after the remarks and stated that he was being “charged for a remark he made which was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper. It was further alleged that it was an ’Aggravated Breach’ as it included a reference to sexual orientation.”

In addition to the fine and suspension, Stokes will have to attend an FA education course.

Stokes responded by saying he had no idea that the term was offensive or homophobic.

“I’d like to apologize for a term used in an earlier tweet,” he wrote on Twitter later. “I didn’t realize what the term meant and was shocked when people pointed it out.”

“It’s unacceptable and it won’t happen again. I am very sorry if I’ve caused offense to anyone,” he added, before eventually just deleting his account.

This Guy Proposed To His Boyfriend With An Epic Lip-Sync Extravaganza

Everybody say love!
From: NewNowNext
Stu Hausmann and DeAndré Upshaw had been together 6 years when Upshaw decided it was the right time to pop the question. Luring his boyfriend into the car with promises of an extravagant brunch, Upshaw surprised his soon-to-be fiancé with an incredible lip-sync proposal.

Luckily for us, Upshaw (pictured  on the left with Hausmann) caught the entire thing on tape, which shows him (along with dozens of the Dallas couple’s close friends and family) lip-syncing to Tegan and Sara’s “Closer.” The video features all the trappings of a great gay proposal: rainbow-colored robes, a “twerking marching band” and, of course, some truly sickening choreography.

STUDY: Gay Men More Likely To Be In An Open Relationship Than Monogamous

Monogamish is the new black.
From: NewNowNext
A new study indicates gay men are more likely to be in an open relationship that be strictly monogamous.

Of the 2,886 men who have sex with men surveyed by the Centre for Social Research in Health at Australia’s University of New South Wales, 32% were in open relationships.

It’s not a wide margin, though, as 31% were in monogamous relationships.

Of the remaining interviewees, 23% were only having casual hookups and 14% were currently not having sex.

The advent of apps like Grindr and Scruff has likely had an impact: 48% of those surveyed said they used hookup apps to find sex partners, up from 35% in 2012. The next most popular ways of meeting were bars (29%) and bathhouses (28%)

The good news is more sex has meant more testing: The number of men who had three or more HIV tests in the past year rose to 22.8%, up from 11.9% in 2012. (We’d like to see that number a lot higher, of course.)

The survey also found that 5.1% of respondents who are HIV-negative men are on PrEP, though the availability of the medication is not as widespread in Australia as it is in the U.S. (Researchers indicated most PrEP users were obtaining the therapy overseas.)

A new report on reality TV uncovered which shows are most popular in each state—with some interesting results.

CableTV.com analyzed Google Trends data and discovered Californians are mad for Keeping up with the Kardashians, Texas and Florida love Shark Tank, and Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi can’t get enough Duck Dynasty.

RuPaul’s Drag Race, meanwhile, is Number One in New York State—beating out runner-ups Mob Wives and Long Island Medium.

Drag Race came in second in California after KUWTK, meaning Khloe’s appearance in Season 6 was perfect synergy.
The report also dug into biographical data of viewers.

* College-educated viewers love Project Runway while those without degrees generally prefer Duck Dynasty.

* Republicans are big fans of Sister Wives while Democrats prefer Project Runway.

* Parents watch Biggest Loser while those without kids watch Dance Moms. (Go figure.)

* Regular churchgoers are big fans of Duck Dynasty, while those who stay home on Sundays go gaga for Survivor.

Sanders Sounds Note of Unity After Meeting With Obama

"I spoke briefly to Secretary Clinton on Tuesday night and I congratulated her on her very strong campaign. I look forward to meeting with her in the near future to see how we can work together to defeat Donald Trump,"
From: NBC News
Bernie Sanders thanked President Barack Obama for his "degree of impartiality" during the Democratic primary and said he looks forward to soon discussing party unity with Hillary Clinton after emerging from a meeting in the Oval Office on Thursday.

"What they said in the beginning is that they would not put their thumbs on the scales. And in fact they kept their word and I appreciate that very, very much," Sanders said of Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

The president released a video endorsing Clinton shortly after the meeting concluded. White House press secretary Josh Earnest described the meeting as a "friendly conversation" that was "focused on the future." He added that Sanders was "not surprised" afterwards when the video endorsing Clinton was released.

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who shares Sanders progressive ideals, also endorsed Clinton on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show Thursday night.

Sanders made a brief statement to the press following the meeting but did not address what he and the president talked about. Obama has called for Democratic party unity now that Clinton has clinched the Democratic presidential nomination, but has not publicly called on Sanders to withdraw from the race.

"My hope is, is that over the next couple of weeks, we're able to pull things together. And what happens during primaries, you get a little ouchy. Everybody does," Obama said in an appearance on Jimmy Fallon Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Sanders gave some hints about his campaign's future timeline. He vowed to compete in next Tuesday's Washington, D.C. primary and then hopes to meet with Clinton. He also said he will fight for his signature issues -- like college affordability, income inqeuality and taking on Wall Street -- during the Democratic National Convention in July.

"I spoke briefly to Secretary Clinton on Tuesday night and I congratulated her on her very strong campaign. I look forward to meeting with her in the near future to see how we can work together to defeat Donald Trump," he said.

"Donald Trump would clearly, to my mind and I think a majority of Americans, be a disaster as president of the United States," Sanders said. "It is unbelievable to me, and I say this in all sincerity, that the Republican party would have a candidate for president who in the year 2016 makes bigotry and discrimination the cornerstone of his campaign."

Sanders also met with Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid on Thursday before holding an additional sit down with Biden and New York Sen. Chuck Schumer. He then held a rally in Washington, D.C.
